Social Exclusion Theory
In this movie the relationships are all interconnected and overlapping, and given the complexity of influences on the individuals, it is impossible to identify a single specific cause in the context of social exclusion. People may be excluded because of deliberate action on the part of others as a result of processes in society which do not involve deliberate action even by choice. However, more generally, the causes of social exclusion that lead to poverty, suffering and sometimes death, can be attributed to the operations of unequal power relations.
In the movie Boyz n the Hood Starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, Regina King, Nia Long, and Morris Chestnut, the film depicts life in economically deprived and socially excluded South Central, Los Angeles, California, 10-year-old Tre Styles (Desi Arnez Hines II) who after getting into a fight at school is sent by his mother, Reva Devereaux (Angela Bassett) to live in the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles to live with his father, Jason "Furious" Styles (Laurence Fishburne) who is a strict but loving father. Tre’s three friends, half brothers Ricky (Donovan McCrary) and Darin (also known as Doughboy and played by Ice Cube), their single mother, Brenda Baker (Tyra Ferrell) and Chris ( Kenneth A. Brown).
In 1991 Doughboy ( played by Ice Cube) has just been released from prison and spends most of the time hanging out in the neighborhood with Monster and Dookie. Ricky ( Morris Chestnut) is a star running back at Crenshaw High School has a son with his girlfriend Shanice (Alysia Rogers) Tre ( Cuba Gooding Jr.) also attends Crenshaw High School with Ricky and also has a girlfriend, Brandi (Nia Long). Tension exists between the two because he wants to have a sexual relationship with Brandi, who resists the idea because of her Catholic faith.
Themes of the film deal with gentrification, police brutality and gang violence, which is what the film’s subplot centers around. Social exclusion is a relatively new concept. It is difficult to find a definition that reflects the whole complexity of the phenomenon. Most of the investigations are one-dimensional and are mostly concentrated on the aspects of life. Most academic studies prove that social exclusion has a more multidimensional character. Social exclusion is a multidimensional concept, related to the relative position of an individual or a group in the entirety of society. Each type of societal "disadvantage" can cause social exclusion.

In this Movie Social exclusion addresses the political nature of deprivation, in that it examines the links between people’s lack of citizenship status and their levels of poverty. Citizenship is centered on the capability of exercising individual and collective rights, and inequalities in this capability can generate a social hierarchy, made up of first- and second-class citizens. This often means that not all individuals are equal before the law; and that they do not all have the same access to public goods supplied by the city, county and state. The Political aspects of exclusion can include the lack of political rights, such as political participation and the right to organize; alienation from or lack of confidence in political processes; and lack of freedom of expression and equality of opportunity. Another one of the concern in the movie was the children put into the problems of drugs and crime in neighborhoods’ already experiencing multiple social and economic difficulties did not help their future. The key message is that the benefits of 'Social Exclusion Prevention' cannot be assumed. Planning decisions, allocation of community resources, the social construction of urban space, types of local government intervention and specific methods used by agencies all impact the nature and effects of prevention. Ultimately, for 'Social Exclusion' to be addressed in a meaningful and lasting manner it is necessary to go beyond episodic social initiatives and approaches which focus predominantly on reducing physical opportunities and improving techniques of control, to implement strategies which see Social Exclusion the first and foremost toward social relationships in the community.
